How to find the matching portal coordinates
- At your starting portal, note its X and Z coordinates. Add Y if you want to compare nearby portals by height.
- Select the dimension you are starting in and enter the coordinates above. The destination result updates as you type.
- Travel to the converted X and Z, find a safe height, and build the destination portal near that point. Test the trip in both directions.
For example, Overworld 800, 64, −400 converts to Nether 100, 64, −50. Starting at Nether 100, 64, −50 converts back to Overworld 800, 64, −400.

Overworld to Nether coords: the 8:1 rule
Divide Overworld X and Z by 8 to get Nether coordinates. Multiply Nether X and Z by 8 to go the other way. Y does not use the 8:1 scale, so the calculator carries it over only as a reference. Choose a safe build height in the destination dimension.
The tool shows both the exact converted point and a whole-block coordinate. Whole-block coordinates round down, including on negative axes: Overworld X −9 becomes exact Nether X −1.125 and block X −2. Keep the exact point in mind when several portals are close together.
Nether to Overworld coordinates
Starting in the Nether? Select Nether → Overworld, then enter your Nether X and Z. The calculator multiplies both by 8. For example, Nether 125, 70, −200 points to Overworld 1000, 70, −1600. Y is shown for reference; choose a safe height when you build.
Why a portal can link somewhere else
Conversion tells you where the game starts looking; it does not reserve a pair of portals. An existing lit portal within the destination search area can be chosen instead. Open the link check above, choose Java or Bedrock, and enter the destination portals you know about. It shows which entered portals are in range and, when Y is available, which one is closest to the converted point in 3D.
In current Java editions, the destination search extends 16 blocks on X and Z when entering the Nether and 128 blocks when entering the Overworld. Bedrock uses 128 blocks in either destination. The search includes all heights. Exact portal blocks and other portals you have not entered can affect the result, so use the comparison to investigate a link, then verify it in game. MC Seed Maps’ portal linking guide has worked examples of these search areas.

Planning a Nether hub or fast route
Save the lit portals you know about in both dimensions. In Check a portal pair, choose the portal you enter and the one you want to reach. The planner compares your saved portals for the outward trip and the return trip separately. If either trip favors another portal, check that portal's position before moving or rebuilding anything.
A suggested position moves only the intended destination portal in the estimate and keeps its current Y. It may improve both predicted trips, but it is not a guaranteed fix: other lit portals, the exact portal blocks, and terrain can change the result. Saved portals stay in this browser. For a tunnel or ice boat route, choose two Overworld stops to compare straight-line travel distances and matching Nether X/Z points. If you want a round layout for your hub, use our Minecraft circle generator to plan the floor around it.
Coordinates cannot show the terrain on the other side. Check for lava, walls and a safe floor before settling on a Y level or lighting a new frame. Test each portal trip in game before relying on the route.
Common portal questions
Does this calculator work for Java and Bedrock?
Yes. Both editions use the same 8:1 horizontal coordinate conversion. Choose your edition in the link check or network planner because the destination search area differs.
Do Nether portal Y coordinates change?
No 8:1 conversion applies to Y. Height still matters when the game compares nearby portal locations. If the matching height is unsafe or blocked, build at a safe height and check the link afterward.
Where should I build the Nether portal?
Start near the converted X and Z shown by the calculator, at a safe Y level. If there are other lit portals nearby, use the link check before placing the frame. The result is a target, not a guarantee of where an automatically generated portal will appear.
Why does the return trip use a different portal?
Minecraft searches again when you travel back. That trip has a new destination point and may favor another lit portal. Save the nearby portals in the network planner and compare both directions, then test the link in game.
How much obsidian does a portal need?
A minimum 2 × 3 opening needs 10 obsidian without corners or 14 with corners. Use the frame counter above for larger openings; Game8’s Minecraft progression guide shows the basic frame and what to bring before entering the Nether.
